How Long Will the Cat5 20 ft Ethernet Cable Last?

The NBASE-T Alliance recently announced the release of a white paper on how to deploy NBASE-T on existing Cat5 20 ft ethernet cable, Cat 6 and Cat 6e copper cabling infrastructures.The consortium has previously released a physical layer specification that specifies 2.5 and 5Gb / s transfer rates up to 100 meters using Category 5 and cabling infrastructure.


This white paper describes performance measurement specifications for certified cabling and strategies for maximizing performance.The alliance also plans to discuss the theme and related cabling topics at the BICSI Fall San Antonio, San Sebastian, USA on September 14, 2016, under the theme of “NBASE-T 2.5G / 5GBASE-T Deployment Technology.”

NBASE-T technology runs on a wide range of installed Cat5 20 ft ethernet cable and Cat6e 20 ft ethernet cable, supports speeds in excess of 1Gb / s, eliminating the need for extensive cable replacement, saving significant installation costs and eliminating the need to interrupt day-to-day operations.

LK Bhupathi, NBASE-T Alliance Marketing Working Group Leader, said: “This white paper helps readers gain a clear understanding of how to assess their cabling topology and infrastructure to determine how best to take advantage of the NBASE-T solution.”

The IEEE P802.3bz ™ draft standard and the wiring requirements are specified in the TIA TSB 5021 and ISO TR 11801-9904 standards.This white paper provides a general guideline and strategy, such as minimizing cable bundles or using spin-down features to ensure network performance reliability. Although NBASE-T systems are capable of compensating for various types of crosstalk and implementing the specified rates in most networks that use existing cabling, in the case of longer Cat5 or Cat 6 cabling, it is recommended that existing infrastructure to evaluate.
